Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art with a fascinating history, rooted in practicality, self-defence, and empowerment—especially for women. According to tradition, the system was created by Ng Mui, a legendary Buddhist nun and martial arts master.
The story goes that Ng Mui observed a white crane defending itself against or rodent (or a snake). She noticed how the bird used precise, quick, and efficient movements, relying on structure, timing, and sensitivity rather than strength. Inspired by the crane’s movements, Ng Mui developed a new style of martial art that focused on efficiency, balance, and practical self-defence.
Ng Mui passed this knowledge to a young woman named Yim Wing Chun, who, according to legend, was being forced into an unwanted marriage. Using Ng Mui’s techniques, Yim Wing Chun successfully defended herself and gained confidence. The system was named after her—Wing Chun—and has been passed down through generations ever since.
